Later this year, Altitude filmmaker Kevin Macdonald will release a new documentary on music icon Whitney Houston. The film is titled simply Whitney, and the first teaser trailer has just graced the web.

MacDonald, the person behind stunning docs like Marley and the superb Touching The Void, directs with Simon Chinn producing it.

Academy Award®-winner Kevin Macdonald narrate the unvarnished and authentic story of the late icon’s life in a film that examines both the meteoric highs and devastating lows of her remarkable and noteworthy career.

Whitney promises to be an intimate, definitive account of the superstar’s life and career. The only film officially supported by the late singer’s estate, it includes previously unreleased recordings, rare never-before-seen footage and live performances recorded by Houston at various stages of her life, as well as original sound recordings and acapellas of some of the late singer’s greatest hits.

Because the filmmakers had access to vast archives of the Houston estate, the film also contains personal home movie footage that has never been seen before, offering a rare glimpse of Whitney’s life behind-the-scenes as known only to her closest relatives, friends and collaborators. The film will be released in cinemas in London and Ireland from 6 July.

When people name the greatest R&B/pop vocalists of all time, Whitney Houston is sure to be on that list. With a varied and distinctive voice, a long string of hits and numerous awards (including several Grammys), she became an instant sensation in 1985 with her self-titled debut album, which is still one of the world’s best-selling debut albums.

Although she didn’t write her own songs, Houston — a native of Newark, N.J. and raised on gospel music — remained a superstar up until her untimely death in 2012 at the age of 48.

Her self-acknowledged drug-addiction that she battled over the years contributed to her early demise, but Houston’s extraordinary vocal talent and memorable songs will forever remain her greatest legacy.

So, why should we watch biopics? According to me, the biggest benefit of watching Biopics is to create a familiarity. They arouse the long gone conscience in people when they see individuals going through difficult situations even if it is on screen. They encourage you to metamorphose your life because they were able to change their circumstances from an ordinary person to a hero. Their perseverence gives you a restored perspective and faith on life.
