Lucknow: In a major shock for UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, BJP lost Yogi's hometown to Samajwadi Party in the bypolls. Yogi has been Gorakhpur MP for five consecutive terms. Adding salt to Yogi's wound, the Samajwadi Party also wrested the Phulpur seat from BJP. UP Dy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya had won the seat in last general elections.

Accepting defeat, Yogi said , "We accept the verdict of the people, this result is unexpected, we will review the shortcomings. I congratulate the winning candidates."

However, Yogi said that defeat was result of the political opportunism by SP and BSP. " Yeh BSP-SP ka jo rajnitik saudebaazi, desh ke vikas ko baadhit karne ke liye bani hai, iske baare mein hum apni rann neeti tayaar karenge( This is political trading by SP and BSP to hamper the development of India, we will work out a strategy to counter this)," Yogi added.
