10 ways to save yourself from phishing due to number portability

 New Delhi: After the news how bank customers of HDFC and State Bank were duped of lakhs in Chennai an alarm bell of sorts has rung for bank customers across the country. Number portabilty has often resulted in the nuisance of phishing thus making the customers vulnerable as in many instances the bank employees, who have an easy access to their accont number, PAN card and Aadhar details, themselves have turned fraudsters. This is why data privacy is a huge concern. This is how you become a victim of phishing due to number portability. If you are careful and understand the below-mentioned points, chances are that you will be able to identify the fraudster and save youself from getting duped:

1. The conmen calls up customers and identify themselves as officials of some popular banks or of RBI.

2. To sound authentic before the call an automated sms is sent asking you not to share your personal and bank details with any caller and then the fraudster comes on the line.

3. Then the customer will be asked to sms 121 to update their KYC details.

4.The fraudster uses a blank SIM and gets number ported

5. With the new ported number the fraudster does fund transfers as the OTPs are sent to the registered mobile number which is with him.

6.fraudsters are able to obtain duplicate SIMs. They prepare forged documents, submit them to telecom service providers and get a duplicate SIM issued after saying the original was lost

7.Customers bank account is accessable from cheque or cash deposit slips from dustbins. So be careful not to throw these papers carelessly

8. Customers fill in their names, bank account number, PAN card information and registered mobile number in the deposit slips. When people make a mistake, they immediately throw it in the dustbin

9. A very common tool is attention diversion tactics to obtain bank details.

10.During demonetisation lots of fraudsters have got personal details of customers in the name of helping them and this data is being used to dupe you. Be careful!
